University Orthopedics Expands its Team With Addition of Dr. Thomas Barrett
Dr. Thomas Barrett Joins Growing Team at University Orthopedics
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (June 10, 2019) — University Orthopedics is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Thomas Barrett to its growing team of skilled orthopedic surgeons. With advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, Dr. Barrett will help support University Orthopedics’ mission to deliver the highest quality orthopedic care in the region.
“Over the course of his career, Dr. Barrett has demonstrated a high level of commitment to the orthopedic profession and to Rhode Island patients by participating in the surgical treatment of hundreds of patients in need of care,” said Dr. Edward Akelman, MD, President of University Orthopedics. “His devotion to helping patients return to their regular lifestyles will be an asset to University Orthopedics.”
A fellowship-trained adult reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Barrett performs first-time and revision replacements of the hip and knee, including partial knee replacements. He is also skilled in performing an arthroscopy of the knee for the treatment of torn cartilage.
“I look forward to treating patients at University Orthopedics, and joining an impressive team of doctors that are leading the way in orthopedic care,” Dr. Barrett said.
Dr. Barrett has written extensively on orthopedic surgery with his work appearing in numerous publications and book chapters. He has also presented his research nationally.
Dr. Barrett earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College, and completed a residency in orthopedics at the same institution. He later completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive orthopedics at the Baylor College of Medicine. In 2016, Dr. Barrett was named an Emerging Leader in Orthopaedics by the American Orthopaedic Association.
Dr. Barrett resides in East Greenwich, R.I., with his wife, three children and their yellow lab.
