Chamber’s S.T.E.A.M Before Hours Showcases Local Innovators

NEWPORT, RI (April 12, 2017) – The Newport County Chamber of Commerce has joined in support of the S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) educational movement. With the goal of highlighting the significance of S.T.E.A.M related fields in Newport County,  the Chamber is working with local businesses and organizations to showcase these industries to the community.

S.T.E.A.M Before Hours began with a successful kick-off on Tuesday, April 4th at FabNewport (1 York Street, Newport). FabNewport operates FabLab at the Florence Gray Center with the goal of empowering learners to master powerful technology and develop a growth mindset. FabNewport showcased how children as young as 10 are learning to use powerful tools, machines and materials to advance their learning.

This series offers an interactive experience for members, highlighting the importance and breadth of the emerging S.T.E.A.M. industries in Newport County and their innovative capabilities.

The next S.T.E.A.M Before Hours event will take place at Cyber Range at CCRI’s Newport Campus on May 4th at 8:00am.  Faculty and staff will show how students are provided with a unique, hands-on testing environment with a virtual platform for cybersecurity modeling, simulation and job training for future cyber professionals.

We are also planning another S.T.E.A.M Before Hours event to take place in September at Naval Station Newport.

“As a voice for local business, our S.T.E.A.M. Before Hours series showcases the exciting work taking place right here in Newport County,” said Executive Director, Erin Donovan-Boyle. “We invite members to attend our next session at CCRI, where they will see first-hand the exceptional innovators at Cyber Range and how they are preparing students for a bright future in the field of cyber technology.”

This event would not be made possible without the support of our local S.T.E.A.M organizations, as well as our media sponsors, 1540 WADK, MIXX 99.3, and The Newport Daily News.

Space is limited. Those interested in attending these informative events, should RSVP by calling 401.847.1608 or visit www.newportchamber.com.
