Laurelmead Cooperative Hosts Forum for Providence City Council Democratic Candidates in Ward 2
PROVIDENCE (September 4, 2018) — On August 29, candidates running for Providence City Council in Ward 2 shared their stances on a wide-range of issues during a panel discussion hosted by Laurelmead Cooperative on Providence’s East Side. Residents gathered in Laurelmead’s Odeon Theater for the opportunity to hear from each Democratic candidate as the September primary draws closer.
Lucinda Dohanian, the Executive Director of Laurelmead, moderated the panel and questioned each candidate regarding their position on issues important to Laurelmead residents and the East Side community. Each candidate — Helen Anthony, Mark Feinstein, and Ryan Holt —shared their insights on a variety of critical matters.
“Some of our residents have expressed concern regarding the proposed Hope Point Tower Project as well as the ongoing discussions to address the city’s underfunded pension system,” said Dohanian. “Our community here is very politically engaged and were excited to hear directly from the candidates on these and other issues.”
Candidates also spoke about preventing gun violence in schools, and whether the city’s water system should be leased to surrounding communities. The forum concluded with questions from audience members. Dohanian then reminded those is attendance that Laurelmead is a polling location for not only residents, but also the surrounding East Side neighborhood as well.
The winner of the September 12 primary will automatically win the Council seat in November as there are no Republican candidates in the race. “This is another reason why this panel was especially important to Laurelmead residents,” Dohanian said.
Following the September 12 primary, Laurelmead will begin hosting additional political forums for both city and statewide offices.
